Special teams play has been a key to Ripon High Schools 38-2 record over the past three seasons. Coach Kelm believes that special teams must receive as much emphasis in practice and planning as offense and defense. Being aggressive and calculated make this special teams' package effective. Ten unique situations make up this special teams package. These areas include kick off, onside kick, kick off return, hands team, punt, punt fake, punt block, punt return, extra point/field goal and fake extra point/field goal. The punt game, onside package, punt block systems make it difficult for the opponent to prepare for Ripon. In all, 20% of all plays in a high school game are special team situations. This DVD is a complete presentation on special teams at the high school level and has been a crucial part of the consistent success at Ripon High School.

Coach Curtis has seen a return to the 3-man front 50 defense in recent years. His presentation covers technique, linebacker play and secondary concepts, and is a good tool for the coach looking into the 50 defense. Curtis emphasizes the outside linebackers in the defense as drop defenders, which opens up many opportunities. A quick nose guard that can guard the run and pass brings an anchor to the defense. When defensive tackles play tight, they must still be able to contain. The two ends must anchor the line of scrimmage and play a tight, 7 technique. The inside linebacker lines up on the outside shoulder of the guard and needs to be in an aggressive, downhill, attack position. Teamwork is essential, as the front must keep people off the linebackers so they are free to make plays. The next teaching progression deals with the split backs, both linebackers will be in slow read. The guts of the defense are the three down linemen. Read attack is based off the release of the linemen you are lined up against. In the secondary, the strong safety gets his run read from the tight end's release.

For over 30 years, Coach Schrader has used the 52 Monster defense with great success and now shares the theories, alignments and fronts, linebacker play, cover schemes, and blitz, stunts and special techniques for this formidable defense. The benefits of the 52 are that it covers all eight running gaps with single gap coverage, allows four rushers and seven players in coverage and can handle any formation with minor adjustments. Linebackers are the backbone of this defense, having to stop the run and the pass. In terms of cover schemes, a coach must determine the ratio of rushers to pass defenders. Secondly, players must have designated areas to defend or be assigned man-to-man responsibilities. Having a philosophy you can believe in year after year is important, according to Coach Coombs, and one defensive philosophy Coach Coombs believes in is the 50 Defense. There are many advantages to the 50 Defense. The defense does not require great size and it's simple to teach and learn. The goal is to build a wall and push the offense to the outside. A disadvantage of the 50 is that it is not great against the pass and is not a penetrating attack. In putting together the defense, everything begins with the nose guard. All line, end and defensive backfield positions are examined and broken down by Coombs. Blitzes, stunts and angling are also part of the overall package. Use of game footage allows for greater understanding of the concepts discussed. The 50 Defense has proven over the years to be a reliable and flexible defense and can help your team win more games.
